Meet with a trained volunteer tutor once a week to learn basic reading, writing and spelling.
The I-CARE Program offers:
- free tutoring for English-speaking adults
- a trained tutor and the resources of Douglas College
- an initial interview to assess your reading, writing and spelling skills
- personalized learning programs
- learning tailored to individual needs and goals
- on-going support from I-CARE personnel
- tutoring sessions in comfortable, private surroundings
- confidentiality

Become a tutor: free training
The I-CARE Tutor Training course at Douglas College will prepare you to teach basic skills in:
- Reading
- Writing
- Spelling
You are
- Compassionate
- Friendly
- Patient
- Tolerant
What you give
- Your excellent ability to read, write and spell in English (high school graduate)
- Two hours (minimum) a week to your adult learner, plus preparation time
- Your commitment for one year
- Monthly reports on tutoring sessions and your learner's progress
What you get
- Comprehensive tutor training - approximately 20 hours of workshops
- A minimum of four practicum experiences
- A certificate issued upon completion
- Free materials
- Valuable volunteer experience
- The reward of helping someone gain life-changing skills
