Murals

By creating nature murals, the natural ecology of an area can be recognized and expressed in an artistically creative way. The murals bring a little bit of nature back to the city, and make everyone in the community aware of the importance of our remaining green spaces.

In schools, murals are a fun way of reconnecting children to their natural environment. Each student has a chance to paint his or her own little section, helping to create something beautiful and permanent to be shared with students in the future as well as everyone in the neighbourhood. Students of all ages and artistic abilities work together on the collective project, and the end result (besides the colourful new landscape) is the students' greater sense of pride in actively taking part in the enhancement of their school and community.

Below are a few examples of murals the Institute of Urban Ecology has completed with school and community centers around the Lower Mainland.

Burnaby:

	Morley Elementary School: 7355 Morley Street TRANSIT: Take SkyTrain to Edmonds Station, take the #131 Kootney Loop to Walker and Morley. Note: mural is in the undercover area at the back of the school.
	Second Street Community School: 7502 - 2nd Street TRANSIT: Take SkyTrain to 22nd Station, take #101 Lougheed Mall to 16th Avenue and 1st Street. Note: mural is on the west fence, by their garden.

Coquitlam:

	Meadowbrook Elementary School: 900 Sharpe Street TRANSIT: Take #169 Coquitlam Station (express bus) to Como Lake and Lougheed, turn left on Como Lake Road, first right is Sharpe Street and down 1 block. Note : mural is inside school.
	Nestor Elementary School: 1266 Nestor Street TRANSIT: Take #165 Lafarge Park and goes right in front of school.

Richmond:

BC Muslim School: 12300 Blundell Avenue TRANSIT: Take #405 No. 5 Road / Richmond Center to Blundell Avenue and No. 5 Rd and the school is 1/2 block west on Blundell. Note : mural is on the fence by their Native Plant Garden.

Surrey:

	Bonaccord Elementary School: 14986 - 98th Avenue TRANSIT: Take SkyTrain to Surrey Central, take #320 Fleetwood to 152nd and 98th, walk west 2 blocks.
	Hjorth Road Elementary School: 14781 - 104th Avenue TRANSIT: Take SkyTrain to Surrey Central, take #320 Fleetwood to 104th and 148th, school is on the left.
	James Ardeil Elementary School: 13751 - 112th Avenue TRANSIT: Take SkyTrain to Gateway, take #328 Grosvenor to 112th and 138th.
	Prince Charles Elementary School: 12405 - 100th Avenue TRANSIT: Take SkyTrain to Surrey Central, take #316 Scottsdale to 123A and 100th Avenue
	Surrey Traditional Elementary School: 13220 - 64th Avenue TRANSIT: Take SkyTrain to Surrey Central, take #321 or #390 to King George, walk west 4 blocks.
