Douglas College recognizes that a study abroad experience is an invaluable part of post-secondary education. We are pleased to offer our students a variety of programs where participants can earn academic credit and/or gain experience relevant to their field of study or area of interest overseas. Visit fascinating sites and immerse in a new culture while engaging in experiential learning. A. Exchanges

B. Field Schools
- usually comprise of 3 academic courses of 3-4 credits each
- take half a semester to complete
- courses are taught by Douglas College instructors and, depending on the program, an instructor from one of our partner institutions
- class size is between 15-25 students
- format: students spend the first 2-3 weeks studying at Douglas College and then go overseas with their instructors and classmates for 4-5 weeks to be based at one of our partner institutions
- the Program Fee normally includes student visa application (as necessary), airport transfers overseas, use of facilities at partner institution, program field trips, shared accommodations, most meals and travel medical insurance. Airport transfers here, airfare, Douglas College tuition, medicines/vaccinations (as necessary) and personal expenses are extra.
- normally scheduled to take place from April to July each year. Students who are accepted must register for the specially designated courses for the Summer Semester.
For 2012, we will be offering field school programs to the following countries:
- Australia (Central Queensland University, Rockhampton campus)
- Belize (Galen University, San Ignacio)
- Scotland (University of Edinburgh)
- Wales (University of Wales Trinity St. David, Carmarthen)

Eligibility- Applicants are advised to check if they have or can meet the pre-requisite requirements, if any, before application.
- Applicants must be in good academic standing, i.e. have an accumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher, by application deadline.
- Douglas College students must register for the specially designated field school courses for the semester in which the program is scheduled to take place.
Qualified students from other institutions are welcome to apply but must first gain admission to Douglas College. For more information on how to apply, visit Douglas College admissions. An Official Transcript from the applicant's current institution is required as part of the Admission application. After successful admission, students can register for the specially designated field school courses. For information on the transferability of our field school courses, visit the BC Transfer Guide.
Information regarding the 2012 Field Schools:
- Admission application deadline is before February 2012.
- Admission application fee: $30.00 (domestic students) / $100.00 (international students)
Students are required to submit the following documents:
- completed Application Form
- Personal Statement indicating their interest and suitability for the field school program
- copy of their unofficial transcript(s)
- completed Emergency Contact Form
- completed Release of Liability Form
- 2 clear photocopies of their passport (photo and signature page)
- deposit of $500.00 (cash, cheque, VISA or MasterCard accepted)
C. Service Learning
Students use the skills they have learned in the classroom or in life in general to make a difference. For 2011, we are offering the following opportunities:

D. Work-Study
- these programs are usually organized by Douglas College partners
- program content include course work and applied experience in a particular field, e.g. Business
- course articulation from these programs applies for some Douglas College courses. Please see your departmental coordinator or Dean to see it counts for your program.
For 2012, we are pleased to connect students to the following programs:
- University of California, Riverside's Hospitality and Tourism Management Certificate Program which includes 6 months of paid training at Walt Disney World ® Resorts. Course articulation applies for some of our Business, Hospitality Management and Marketing courses.
- Business Challenge for Youth China Tour which is aimed at Business and Marketing students. Participation count toward industry experience hours requirement in the Hospitality Management Diploma Program.
